Jack Kerns, age 84, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004 at his home in Hemet, California. Born Friday, September 24, 1920 in Lawrence, Kansas; he was the son of the late Jacob and Sara Kerns. Jack joined the U.S. Marines in December of 1941. During World War II he was in the South Pacific for 32 months and was honorably discharged in September 1945. He attended two Art Schools: The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and The Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. Jack was employed as an Assistant Animator for 17 years for the Disney Studio and for 10 years for the Hanna-Barbera Studio. He was a member of the Screen Cartoonist Union for 27 years. He met Billie Johns while they were both employed at Hanna-Barbera; they married on September 28, 1971 in Pasadena, California. Jack retired from the Disney Studio, November 30, 1982 and Billie retired from the Disney Studio in April of 1986. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling and painting. Preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Sara Kerns. Mr. Kerns is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mildred (Billie) Kerns, daughters; Karen Simpson of Indiana and Sandra Friberg of Nevada, and his sister Margie Murphy of Kansas, five grandchildren: Ryan, Janelle, Michael, Heather, and Brian, and 4 great-grandchildren. Visitation and graveside services are pending in Lawrence, Kansas.
